Monopoly: Here and Now

by Brock on April 26, 2006

I read today on CNNMoneny.com that a “Here and Now” edition will soon replace the classic version of the game. (Monopoly Rolls Dice, Changes Look)

What does this mean exactly? The original Atlantic City locales will be replaced with modern day landmarks and streets. Now I know some of you are feeling nostalgic and calling foul. Believe me, I can understand – I fear change just as much as the next hermit, xenophobe, or neo-luddite. But the great part about all of this is that fans get to vote on which sites will be in the new game!

Just go to the monopoly website and you can vote on any of the three locales located in 22 different U.S. cities. Voting lasts until May 12th, so don’t delay. The city that receives the most votes will be awarded the coveted blue property (remember Boardwalk?).

It is at this point that I would like to make a call to all Atlantans out there: Represent the ATL and vote for Peachtree St., Centennial Olympic Park, or Stone Mountain. You can only vote once a day for each city, but I think you can vote for multiple cities in one day. But hear this: each vote for another city is like a vote against your city, so don’t get carried away! Stay focused.

In addition to changing the regular properties, the updated version of the game will replace the original railroad lines with New York’s JFK airport, Chicago’s O’Hare, Los Angeles’ LAX and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson. Peace-up, A-town down.

Also, “property values will rise, money will be in higher denominations and ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ cards will reflect more modern scenarios.”

And don’t worry; the original version of the game will still be available.

The Monopoly website has a few other cool things to offer, including the “Tips & Fun Stuff” section which includes trivia and a very in-depth and interesting strategy guide with a breakdown of which properties are landed on most often.
