I’m going to hold off on posting my thoughts on the latest episode of 24 for the sake of avoiding an unprecedented three 24 posts in a row.
School has been very busy lately and I haven’t had much time to sit down and update the blog. I’m about to go to bed since I did not get much sleep last night but I thought it might be therapeutic to give an update on my whereabouts.
Virginia Tech is not far from UVA (~2.5 hours), so it has been pretty surreal the past couple of days reading and hearing about what happened there on Monday. I don’t know many people there – the few I do know are OK – but a tragedy like this is made all the more real when it happens so close to where you live.
Virginia Tech is UVA’s state rival when it comes to athletics, so I’ve interacted with my share of Hokies at various sporting events, and through engineering or social events, and even at work. Having interacted with them and knowing that they are just regular, real people makes you realize how such tragedies can affect anyone.
Another sad event recently occurred though on a more personal level: Emily’s cat, Duncan, died. He was hit by a car the Friday before last. This was made doubly sad because the kitten that I bought at the same time Emily bought Duncan has died (though that was some time ago).
The picture below is of Jackson (left, my kitten) and Duncan (right, Emily’s kitten).

That picture was probably taken about a week after we got them.
Jackson died maybe a couple of months later of FIP. He was a very sweet and cuddly cat. Duncan was a little bit more wild and energetic, but no less sweet. He liked to play and purred very loudly.
Here is a recent picture of Duncan:

He will be missed.
Been listening to this one a lot, pretty much the whole way through.
This novel was published after the Chilean-Mexican author's death, and I'm not even sure if it was entirely finished or not. It is broken up into five parts which, while connected, stand pretty much on there own. I have not yet made it to the grim part about the murders of hundreds of women in Mexico, so I have so far found it enjoyable and even funny despite some dark underpinnings. It's had a ton of critical praise, and I like it much more than my last foray into the violent novel genre: Blood Meridian.
