Well, I was not actually driving, but I was in the passenger seat which made it plenty scary for me.
Emily and I were in Fairfax, Virginia on our way to a friend’s party. Emily was driving her 2002 Prius and looking for the correct street to turn on when we went over the top of a hill and into the middle of an intersection where a red Ford Explorer was making a turn.
Emily tried to swerve out of the way, but we only saw it at the very last second. So, it was a midly serious impact, I would say. Both of our airbags deployed, and I was rocked around quite a bit (the Explorer hit on my side of the car), but, luckily, no one was seriously hurt.
It was all very scary, I thought, but Emily handled it amazingly well. She said she had seen so many worse accidents as an EMT for the Charlottesville Rescue Squad that she was a little desensitized. But eventually the reality set in that her little Prius that she loved so much was gone. Plus, there is always that feeling of “Stupid! I wish I hadn’t done that!” which anyone who has been in any kind of fender-bender can relate to.
We have not gotten the final word from the insurance company yet, but we expect the carto be totaled since most of the front end of the car was messed up pretty bad. Not surprisingly, the Explorer didn’t look so bad.
On a lighter note, Emily started Medical School today (yay!). I’m so proud of her. She is going to school in Richmond while I am still in Charlottesville, so now having only one carmakes things a little more difficult.
I drove her in this morning, and will pick her up at the end of the week so she can come home. We are only about an hour away, so it is not that bad and we realize we are pretty lucky to be able to go to school so close to each other, but it is still hard to be apart.
But she will probably get more work done without me around always trying to get her to watch some boring movie that I got from Netflix.
Good luck, sweetie!
Been listening to this one a lot, pretty much the whole way through.
This novel was published after the Chilean-Mexican author's death, and I'm not even sure if it was entirely finished or not. It is broken up into five parts which, while connected, stand pretty much on there own. I have not yet made it to the grim part about the murders of hundreds of women in Mexico, so I have so far found it enjoyable and even funny despite some dark underpinnings. It's had a ton of critical praise, and I like it much more than my last foray into the violent novel genre: Blood Meridian.

Brock, really sorry to hear about this. Glad to hear you are both ok!
Thanks, Brock (yes, readers: we are both named Brock).
Luckily, I didn’t have to drive back and forth to Richmond too many times since Emily got a new (used) car this weekend. We went to CarMax just to look and ended up finding a good deal on a 2007 Hyundai Accent. Hyundai, as her father was quick to point out, is a Korean car manufacturer, and on top of that it has pretty good gas mileage – 37 mpg so far, compared to maybe 44 for her Prius.
She still misses that Prius, though.
