Paper or Plastic?

I came across this post titled “Green by Decree” on inkycircus today. The post mentions that Australia is about to ban incandescent light bulbs in favor of more energy efficient ones (kudos!), and also how in Ireland you have to pay extra for plastic bags in shops (paper is free).
This reminded me of recently reading somewhere that plastic bags were actually more environmentally friendly [...]
